AGM 2025 Chairman's Report

Chairman’s Report 2024/25

Dear Members

First, I would like to thank you for renewing your membership of the Society. There are significant financial pressures on all of us and it is good to see that you are still showing an active interest in the series of lectures, visits and Special Interest days which we are offering for the coming season. We hope that you will enjoy these.

We are still happy to welcome new members and if you have friends or neighbours who may be interested please do not hesitate to invite them to come as a guest.

I hope that you will find the coming year’s programme interesting and stimulating.

The lecture programme through the last season was very well received. Most lectures were rated ‘Excellent’ and two as ‘Outstanding’

We experienced some unexpected glitches early in the season with the Assembly Room both with lighting and sound due to some unannounced renovations which however were eventually resolved successfully.

We had two Study Days shared with the other Chichester Arts Societies. Both were very successful.

There were a number of visits through the year to Winchester, Portsmouth Distillery and Tudeley and Standen House, which have all been much enjoyed. We also enjoyed the novelty of a ‘virtual’ live tour of the Church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice given by Italian guide Luisella Romeo to members in the Assembly Room, followed by Italian drinks and nibbles.

There was a very successful Summer Social at Stansted House, with guided tours of the House and Chapel and tea.

Ian Milton as Heritage Arts Co-ordinator also reformed his team of helpers to complete the second phase of the organisation of the  Chichester Cathedral Muniment Room. This has provided a comprehensive catalogue of almost 2600 documents which can now be accessed and borrowed by researchers.

Our Young Arts Programme this year was our support for the University of Chichester’s Fine Arts Graduates Show which took place in the Oxmarket Gallery. The students much appreciated the opportunity to showcase their works to a public audience. They also learnt the fundamentals of preparing for a professional exhibition. We wished them well for their professional futures. We liaised with the other daytime Chichester Arts Societies in this and are planning further co-operation for other projects next year. Funding for this came from the Arts Society nationally.

Last year the national organisation of the Arts Society was in some turmoil. A new Board of trustees was elected in August last year and they have engaged in reviewing the Society’s position and setting out their view of how we should approach the future.  Their focus will be firmly on promoting the Arts Society brand, and on increasing the membership of The Arts Society, to enable us to continue to deliver its charitable objects through the local society network. We support this and hope that it will enable all the Societies to thrive and grow. They will be continuing funding of larger scale projects but the format of this will be slightly different.

I should not finish the round-up of the year without also thanking the people behind the scenes who make the provision of the programme possible:

·       Tony Chapman, our Treasurer, for his grip on our finances and dealing with the lecturers increasingly complex audio-visual requirements

·       Hilary Williams for organisation of the programme of lecturers

·       Ian Milton for the organisation of the visits and

·       Joan Langhorne for her valuable assistance on these

·       Prim Hoult, in addition to her joint membership Secretary role, for the organisation of the Summer Social

·       Ros Bowen, joint membership Secretary, for delivery of the monthly Updates

·       Kathryn Pearce our Honorary Secretary who has produced all our Agendas and Committee minutes, together with the necessary tea and coffee at our meetings

·       Debs Bartlett-Pitt for the organisation of the Study Day on Opera

·       to Prim Hoult, Joan Langhorne, Sue Waring, Rosy McNally, Ruth Ritchie and other members for the provision of the excellent refreshments at our virtual Venice tour

·       Chris Wharf for organisation at each lecture of our team of reception volunteers

Best wishes to you all.

AGM October 2024 Chairman's Report

Dear Member,

You will have received by post or e mail the Agenda for our 2024 AGM to be held on 8th October in the Assembly Room, prior to the first lecture of our season for 2024/25. All the other AGM papers are on our website.

We are all aware of the increasing cost of all living expenses and we are grateful that you have decided to renew your membership in the face of these pressures on budgets.

We do still need new members and would welcome any of your friends and others who might consider joining. Guests will be welcome to our lectures and we hope that you would be happy to recommend a visit. We have decided that this year we will increase the guest visitor fee to £10 which we feel reflects good value for money, but this will be deducted from the membership fee, if the guest decides to join.

This has been my first year as Chairman, and it has been a bit of a learning curve. Public speaking is not my forte and despite my best endeavours, I haven’t yet grown tall enough to speak clearly into the mic. My semaphore of the fire exits is, I hope, improving.  My apologies to all who struggle to hear the announcements.

Our lectures in the Assembly Room were all well-received. There were two Study Days, one run by Debs Bartlett-Pitt on behalf of this Society and the other in co-operation with us by TAS City of Chichester which were both very successful.

There was a range of visits managed by Ian Milton our Visits Co-ordinator, including two tours of St Mary’s Hospital, the alms houses in Chichester, the second as a result of the popularity of the first and tours of Watts Gallery and most recently Parham House and Garden which were excellent.

We had a successful Summer Social at Goodwood organised by Joan Langhorne and blessed with lovely weather.

Ian Milton as Heritage Arts Co-ordinator has been hoping to get us restarted on the second phase of the Chichester Cathedral project, but this has again been delayed by the Cathedral and may start in the Autumn.

We obtained from the Arts Society Headquarters a grant from the Patricia Fay Fund, which in collaboration with the other Chichester daytime Arts Societies has been used sponsor the University of Chichester Fine Arts Graduates’ Show at the Oxmarket. This has proved very welcome to the graduates who expressed their thanks to us for this support in the first professional exhibition of their careers. We are hoping to continue this support during 2024/25.

The Arts Society (nationally) continues to provide us with support for our work and in running the Directory which provides all the excellent lecturers who visit us.

During the course of the year there was however a move to change its constitution which would have resulted in a loss of the individual Societies’ membership of the Arts Society and our ability to vote on the appointment of the Trustees who are responsible for running the organisation. In common with the substantial majority of local Societies, your Committee was opposed to this. As a result of the vote which was taken the proposals were overwhelmingly defeated. At the AGM of The Arts Society (nationally) to take place in August the present Trustees have said they will resign and new Trustees selected by the member organisations will replace them.

We are hopeful that the new Trustees will endeavour to increase The Arts Society’s public profile to help us locally with membership.  This report is written before that AGM has taken place.

Finally, I must thank the members of the Committee without whom it would not be possible to bring you the lectures and events which we have had this year and those which are planned.

In addition to those mentioned above:

Tony Chapman has once again been indefatigable in keeping our accounts, juggling this with the audio-visual requirements of the lecturers, and keeping the website up-to-date

Hilary Williams our new Programme Secretary, who is also an AS lecturer, has brought her erudition to managing and welcoming the lecturers professionally.

Prim Hoult and Ros Bowen as joint membership secretaries have dealt with the renewals, new members and all queries, in addition to Ros’ dealing with the distribution of the monthly Newsletter to members.

Kathryn Pearce as Honorary Secretary has kept us all in the loop for our meetings and made sure no item was overlooked

Last but certainly not least I must say thank you to Sybil Papworth who is retiring as our Honorary President at this meeting. She was a founder member of the Society and has been a tremendous support for all of us throughout. Her knowledge and understanding of the arts is immense and she has used this for the Society’s benefit tirelessly. Her kindness and generosity with her time and advice cannot be exaggerated. It has been a great privilege to have her on the Committee and I thank her for everything she has done for us over many years and for her support for me personally during this my first year as Chairman. We wish her a happy and deserved retirement.

Best wishes to you all

Gillian Scott

Chairman

How the art Market developed from the Renaissance to the 21st Century

The Arts Society Turners Hill

SPECIAL INTEREST DAY – WEDNESDAY 1 MAY 2024

To be held in the Dove Suite at The Ark, Turners Hill. Timing 10.00 - 15.00

Subject: How the Art Market developed from the Renaissance to the 21st Century

Lecturer: Dr Tom Flynn

We will look at how the European art market has evolved from a structure of commissioning and   elite patronage by the wealthy princes of the Italian Renaissance, through to the commercial instincts of the merchant classes of Holland's Golden Age, and on to the impact of the Grand Tour on British tastes in the eighteenth century. We then explore the gradual appearance of a professional  ̳dealer‘ class in France and England in the nineteenth century before focusing on the speculative activities at work in the twentieth century art market. It's a fascinating story of capitalist self-interest, connoisseurship, commercial acumen, occasional bad behaviour and frequent sleight of hand.

The lectures touch on the emergence of an entrepreneurial middle class in the mid-nineteenth century whose members sought to emulate the aristocracy through their consumer choices, leisure activities and aesthetic tastes. Conspicuous consumption — the eternal desire of successful people to display their success through the works of art they acquire — remains as powerful a driver of the global art market today as it was in Renaissance Florence.

Agenda: Timings are approximate

The Arts Society Midhurst

A mid-winter teatime

Zoom lecture

Thursday, 11th January 2024 starting at 5.00pm

Hans Holbein the Younger at the Tudor Court

This lecture is designed to complement the major exhibition Holbein at the Tudor Court, showing at the Queens Gallery, Buckingham Palace, London.

LECTURE: This major exhibition presents a rare opportunity to view more than 100 works by Holbein from Henry VIII’s court. including drawings, paintings, miniatures and book illustrations by the artist and will tell the stories of his sitters through the portraits he created. Many of these works cannot be on permanent display for conservation reasons, but the exhibition will give visitors the rare opportunity to come face-to-face with some of the key figures of the Tudor court, from Anne Boleyn to Sir Thomas More.

This Zoom lecture is designed to enhance the enjoyment and understanding of those wishing to visit the exhibition on their own, with friends or a part of a group. It also aims to provide an opportunity to learn about Holbein, to put his approach to portraiture into context and reveal more about the intriguing characters known to us through Tudor history

Goodwood painting restoration event

Join us for a talk by conservator Ying Yang on the restoration of one
of Goodwood House’s most significant portraits, with a Champagne
and canapé reception in the State Apartments of Goodwood House.

Whilst working on Sir Godfrey Kneller’s painting of Louise
de Keroualle (c.1680), mother of the 1st Duke of Richmond and
mistress of King Charles II, Ying realised the painting was not
as it appeared. Employing ultraviolet photography, decades of
expertise and historical detection, Ying unearthed finds that
are changing the way the artwork is understood.

AGM 2022/23 - Chairman's Report

Dear Member,

You will have received by email the Agenda for our 2023 AGM, to be held on 10th October, before our first lecture of the 2023/24 season. This year all other AGM papers are on our website; this is to avoid heavy postage costs.

Thank you for renewing your membership. We appreciate that times are financially difficult for many. But our costs – for lectures, room hire and the like – have all risen and we needed to increase the subscription fee this year - after a long pause - in order to maintain a healthy financial position (see Annual Accounts in AGM papers).

This year, we have had a number of members who, for a variety of reasons, have not renewed their membership. We do need new members to keep subscription costs down. The best recruitment method is by recommendation from you, the existing members, so do please help us find replacements for those who have left. We are planning a voucher system to assist in this.

I hope that you will find the coming year’s programme to be as wide-ranging and interesting as usual. The nine lectures, combined with our Study Days, the national AS offerings, magazine and our Visits, still represent excellent value for money – and offer very high quality.

Looking over last year, it was a real pleasure to get back to normal after the trials of lockdown. We held all our lectures live in the Assembly Room – with tea again served! We had two Study Days, shared with the other Chichester Arts Societies. We had a range of excellent Visits to, inter alia, the Sussex Landscapes exhibition at Pallant House; the Towner and Russell-Cotes galleries; and the Wallace Collection in London. We had a very successful Summer Social at Tinwood Vineyard. Grateful thanks to Ian Milton and Marilyn Humphrey for all their hard work in the organisation.

Ian Milton also led our Heritage project at the Cathedral, archiving their property records, which our members involved much enjoyed and completed this year. The Arts Society nationally, in order to secure its charitable status, disburses grants to other charities and organisations involved in a range of arts activities – to help them achieve their objectives. We secured funding from AS Headquarters to support Pallant House Gallery with materials to help less-able visitors to enjoy their exhibits (again jointly with the other Chichester Societies) and also to help attendees at Sage House at Tangmere with art classes. Many thanks to Angela Hodgson for all she has done on our Volunteer and Young Arts work.

An awful lot of work goes on “behind the scenes” to bring you our annual Programme. In addition to those mentioned above, I would like to pay particular tribute

  • to my Vice-Chairman, Gillian Scott, for all that she has done to put together such an excellent range of lectures and Study Days;
  • to Tony Chapman for not only keeping our finances in good order, but also dealing with the vagaries of lecturers’ audio-visual needs;
  • to Patricia Goodhew for her Hon Secretarial load, keeping us on the straight and narrow under our constitution and at all our meetings
  • to our Membership Secretary Sue Farman for her work in dealing with annual membership renewals, our records and enquiries throughout the year
  • to our President Sybil Papworth for her wise counsel and support
  • Chris Wharf and all her Registration volunteers.

This was my last year as Chairman, having had my tenure extended due to the covid lockdown. I stand down at the AGM and, as you will see from the Agenda, so do a number of our long-serving Committee members. We all owe them an enormous debt of gratitude for keeping our Society not only afloat, but active and thriving, through the most difficult period in its long history.

I am delighted that we have been able to recruit excellent nominees to form our new Committee, with Gillian Scott as our proposed new Chair. I commend them to you and wish them every success.

Best wishes to you all.

Ian Farman. Chairman.

Arts Society Chichister - Church Recording

The Chichester Combined Church Recording Group is well and truly back in operation! We have resumed producing our record of St George’s Church in Whyke and would welcome recorders to the group, as our number has been reduced because of illness.

If you are interested in recording the contents of a church, have a computer and an interest in the subject, there is more work to do in St George’s - although the Memorials, Stonework, Woodwork, Windows, Library are now completed.

At present we meet every Monday morning 10.00-12.00 as we are trying to make up for the long gap we had when we were unable to record in 2020 and 2021.

Just a little warning – Church Recording is addictive…

February 2022 News update

THE ARTS SOCIETY CHICHESTER LAVANT VALLEY – FEBRUARY 2022 UPDATE

Dear Member,

I hope you are keeping well. I would like to update you about our forthcoming events.

8th February Lecture LIVE – “Art & Architecture; Estranged Bedfellows”

In the light of the reduced number of omicron cases in our area and the relaxation of Government covid restrictions, we have decided that this lecture will be held live in the Assembly Room. 2.00 pm start – please do not arrive before 1.30 pm.

Please continue to wear a face covering once you are inside the building. Spaced out seating and ventilation will continue and we shall seek to avoid bunching. We shall continue with live lectures unless there is another covid wave. We hope to resume teas in April.

8th March Lecture – “Smallhythe Place & Other Hidden Gems” – Valuations for Members

Our March lecturer is John Benjamin, who will be well known to members as the long-standing jewellery expert on the BBC’s  Antiques Roadshow.

John has kindly agreed to assess/value items of jewellery which members might wish to bring along. He will do this after the lecture. We shall need to limit members to one item each and also limit and pre-register the number of members John can see. To register your interest, please email our Programme Secretary Gillian Scott at gillian.scottaslv@gmail.com before 5th March. First come, first served.

A Virtual Visit to St Mark’s Square, Venice – 29th March 2.00 pm

We had planned a Visit in March to the Wallace Collection in London to link in with our January lecture. However, group visits are still not available there (though we hope to reinstate this Visit later in the year).

To make up for this, we have arranged a Virtual Visit on Zoom to all the fascinating buildings around St Mark’s Square in Venice, with a qualified guide, Luisella Romeo. This will be a live broadcast. Further details are up on our website and the link to join will follow by email. Mark the date!

Best wishes from your Committee.

Ian Farman. Chairman.

Chairman's Report 2020/21

THE ARTS SOCIETY LAVANT VALLEY

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT 2020/21

Well, what a year! It is actually quite difficult to remember all that has come to pass since my last Report and I am not going to try to give a detailed account. My hope, above all, is that you have come through the worst of the pandemic as unscathed as possible and that we are able to look forward now to better times and delivering our varied and exciting Programme for next season in a more normal way.

Thank you for renewing your membership. Your Committee is grateful to you for placing your faith in our Society.

Our lectures and virtual tours last year were of course all delivered by Zoom, apart from the very successful visit to the Festival Theatre. We were delighted that so many of you mastered the technology and were able to join in with these; our lecturers and tour guides did us proud and we were so glad we were able to give you the full list of our lectures – with some extra visits and talks thrown in. For those without internet access, we hope that at least our regular Updates kept you in touch.

We have been liaising with the City Council regarding our return to the Assembly Room for our lectures, taking account of required covid precautions. We have completed a full risk assessment and you have with this mailing a Note of the things we need to do in order to stay safe. Do please read this before our first lecture on October 12th. Should covid rules change, we have worked out back-up approaches to deliver lectures and will advise you of these as necessary. We will also advise you of the way in which visits will be safely handled when these are advertised.

Our Arts Volunteering and Heritage Volunteering programmes were also curtailed last year. We did however support the AS Sussex Area sponsorship of a metalworking student at West Dean College and also provided support to young musicians at West Sussex Music and an arts project at West Dean School. Our Heritage programme to catalogue the Cathedral’s property records is now scheduled to start this autumn.

You will see from our Treasurer’s Report that our finances remain in good shape – hence our decision to give a one-off reduction in membership fee for 2021/22. Though still healthy, our membership numbers have dropped somewhat – at least partly due to the impact of the pandemic. So do please use every effort to bring in new members to join us. (We shall be undertaking some additional marketing alongside a recruitment campaign by the National AS).

Your Committee is standing for election again en bloc. I cannot say how much that I have valued their support over this very difficult and time-consuming year. They have worked tirelessly to give members the full programme, learning all sorts of new tricks on the way! We owe them a considerable debt.

But we have been unable to work on recruiting new Committee members and a large number of the present Committee will stand down at the end of this year. So, we really do need volunteers for the Committee urgently – to allow for a period of overlap. Please do come forward when we can meet again.

Until then – best wishes.

Ian Farman.

Chairman.

April News Update

THE ARTS SOCIETY LAVANT VALLEY – APRIL 2021 UPDATE

Dear Member,

I know that you do not usually have access to email or to Zoom online for our lectures and virtual visits. So I am posting this Update to you, so you have access to booking the live Visit planned for June – see below – and in case after vaccination you are able to join another member with computer facilities.

As I mentioned last month, we are carrying on with Zoom lectures - and a virtual visit - for April and May. You will see below that we have a live visit planned for June; whether June’s lecture can be back in the Assembly Room depends upon Government rules which are yet to be published. Hopefully more news by May’s Update.

The April Lecture

This will be on line by Zoom on Tuesday 13th April starting at 2.00 pm. Join using the link below from 1.30pm – please don’t leave it too late or you may be shut out. Alexandra Epps will talk to us about Peggy Guggenheim, the “poor little rich girl” who arguably changed the face of public art in the 20th Century. Looks to be fascinating.

Meeting ID 622 364 0593     Passcode tony 123

May and June Visits

Following our May lecture on 11th May (“Painting the Modern Garden – From Monet to Matisse”), we have arranged another virtual visit on Zoom, this time to the historic City of York on Tuesday 25th May at 2.00 pm. Full details in the May Update.

On Wednesday 23rd June, we have organised a live visit to the exhibition of 19th Century European Art at Champs Hill. By then, on the timetable for release from lockdown, we should be free of restrictions and able to wander round the self-guided exhibition and the glorious gardens freely. But, to be on the safe side, we are restricted to 30 tickets, which at least initially will be for ASLV members only.

Many of you will have been to the Bowerman Foundation at Champs Hill before. Champs Hill is just south of Pulborough and we shall drive ourselves there for a 2.00 pm start. There is plenty of parking. To get to the exhibition and see the gardens will involve a certain amount of walking.

If you would like to join us, please complete the attached Booking Form and return it with your cheque and SAE as shown. (We are asked to pay a £10 donation per member. Cheques will not be banked until we are certain the visit can proceed; money cannot be refunded once cheques are banked).

The Booking Form is also on our website. Only if you are really unable to print off the Form, please email Ian Milton at iansmilton@hotmail.com or phone him on 01243 371788 to request alternative arrangements. Full exhibition and joining information will be posted to you.

Look after yourselves and hope to see you again for the April lecture.

Best wishes to you all from your Committee.

Ian Farman. Chairman.

June 2020 News Update

ARTS SOCIETY LAVANT VALLEY – JUNE 2020 UPDATE FOR MEMBERS

Dear Members,

For those able to join us for Peter Medhurst’s Venice Zoom lecture last Tuesday, I do hope you enjoyed what your Committee felt was an outstanding first run in this new format. It was a real delight to see so many of you on line and greeting one another. Quite like a party!

We were one of the first two Arts Societies in Sussex to trial this new lecture format and, now that we know it works and a significant number of you can join in, we are offering you another.

So mark your diaries for 2.00pm on Tuesday 14th July, when our new Programme Secretary Claire Power has arranged a Zoom lecture by the highly-recommended Rosalind Whyte on “Spirituality in 20th Century Art”.

The lecture will cover the overtly religious work of artists such as Eric Gill, as well as the more generally spiritual elements of work by artists such as Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. It will also look at work by Kandinsky and Mondrian and later artists and should be very interesting and wide-ranging.

Do please join us and ask other members to do so. We will let you have the Zoom joining links on 13th July by email. (Instructions for setting up Zoom on your machine were in the May Member Update and are on the ASLV website under News).

Your Committee continues to work hard to set up the programme for the 2020/21 season. We have all the lectures and one Study Day organised and Visits planned. The manner and timings in which we will be able to deliver these to you will of course depend upon Government guidelines as these evolve; but we are being as adaptable as possible in our planning so that we stand the best chance of giving you a full programme. (An outline of the programme was in your April Update).

You will receive membership renewal forms by post in the first part of July. Do please renew your membership! It provides most of our income and very good value for money in what you get from ASLV and the National Arts Society and – as I have said – we plan to give you what you have come to expect for your subscription come what may.

Look after yourselves and best wishes.

Ian Farman.
Chairman.

May 2020 News Update

ARTS SOCIETY LAVANT VALLEY – MAY 2020 UPDATE FOR MEMBERS
Dear members,

First, I hope that this finds you and your families in good health and not too affected by all the consequences of the corona virus outbreak.

Your Committee has continued to work, meet and plan ahead in the lockdown period. We have done this by using Zoom, an internet meeting facility. We would like to give you this Update on our current thoughts.

As you all know, we had to cancel our lectures scheduled for April, May and June.
However, we have now arranged for you to receive via the Zoom internet application a lecture on Tuesday 9th June at our usual time of 2.00 pm (though you will need to join in 10 minutes beforehand).

This lecture will be given by Peter Medhurst, one of our most popular lecturers, on the subject of “The Glory of Venice – 500 years of Music & the Arts”. It will include Peter’s usual wonderful mix of slides and music.

We do hope that as many of you as possible will join us for this ASLV lecture. There will be a dummy run on Zoom with Peter on Friday 5th June between 11.00 am and 12 noon. This will allow those of you who may not have used Zoom before to try it out, before the lecture proper on 9th June. Zoom is not difficult to use and we give detailed instructions on how to do it at the end of this Update. On 5th June you can join at any time between 11.00 am and 12 noon and leave when you feel happy with using Zoom.

We do appreciate that not all members have computers, tablets or internet access, but we believe that we should trial this new approach now in case we have to continue to use it later in the year.

At this stage, Government guidelines are unclear as to what we may be able to do regarding our next year’s programme starting in October. However, as circumstances improve, we remain positive and hope to go ahead with the programme as given to you in our April Update, even if social distancing and other measures (if still in force) oblige us to alter our normal arrangements.

We shall continue to keep you updated regularly on our plans both by email and on the ASLV website www.theartssocietylavantvalley.org.uk Please be assured that your Society fully intends to keep operating as best we can and to bring you lectures and visits in whatever format will work safely for you.

Membership renewal forms will come by post in the summer and we would urge you please to renew your membership as this is our main source of income. It also allows you access to an increasing range of downloadable lectures and material from the National Arts Society website; and it allows us to continue to support the Arts and the Arts Society lecturers through this very difficult time.

With best wishes to you all from your Committee.

Ian Farman.
Chairman.

Instructions for using Zoom – Zoom is free!

If you do not already have Zoom on your computer, Ipad or Iphone, or other tablet or smart ‘phone, please do join us for the dummy run between 11.00 am and 12 noon on 5th June, when help from Peter will be on hand for you.

We regret that the Committee is unable to help with computer queries.

Please print out and keep these instructions for future use.

If you are going to use a computer (PC or laptop) for the lecture, then in your web browser (eg Google or MS Edge) type in or click here: https://Zoom.us/download.

This will take you directly to Zoom and to a page which allows you to download the free Zoom app. Ensure that only this address is shown in your web browser.

Alternatively you can download it by going to Zoom.us and looking for the downloadable app there.

In either case, press “Download the Zoom Client for Meetings” app and follow installation instructions, opening an account by typing in your email address and creating a password.

If you are going to use an Ipad or other tablet device, or a smart ‘phone, then download the free Zoom app from your Apple or other App Store. You can set up an account just by giving your email address and creating a password.

In either case, once installed, you will have all you need to join Zoom meetings on line for the future. Then follow these steps:-

  • For the dummy run on 5th June, please follow the blue link below. Just click on the link and it will take you to Peter’s website. You may then need to enter the meeting ID code and password shown below:
  • Join Zoom Meeting
  • https://zoom.us/j/93735741883?pwd=TDl1WHE0ak5vWHRSd1dTcVNaUnhHQT09
  • Meeting ID: 937 3574 1883
  • Password: 547192
  • If this link does not take you straight in, copy and paste it into your browser at the top of your screen.

  • For the lecture proper on 9th June, you will be sent an email invitation to join by the ASLV Committee the day before. (Check your junk box). 10 minutes before the lecture starts, go to your email invitation, click on the blue “Click Here to Join” link and follow the simple instructions there. (NB You will not be able to join the lecture once it has started).

  • On both dates you will be asked to click on the “Test your Sound Settings” button to make sure your speakers are receiving audio for the lecture

  • You may be kept in the “waiting room” for a short time, but Peter will admit all members before the lecture is due to start

  • If you cannot see Peter, check the “Video” button at the bottom of your screen. Make sure that it is “live”. If it has a line through it, just click on the icon to make it live.

  • When all is ready, Peter will mute all our microphones, Ian Farman will make the introductions and Peter will deliver his lecture. We will be muted until the end of the lecture.

  • If you want to ask Peter a question at the end of the lecture, click on the “Chat” icon at the bottom of your screen and type in a brief question which Peter will see and answer. We will have to restrict the number of questions taken.

April 2020 News Update

ARTS SOCIETY LAVANT VALLEY – APRIL 2020 UPDATE FOR MEMBERS

Dear members,

In these very difficult times, I do hope that you are keeping well and have not been affected by the dreadful corona virus. Your Committee join me in wishing you all the very best of health.

The purpose of this letter is, first, to keep you informed on access to certain arts websites which may be of interest to you in this period of lockdown and second to advise you of how we plan to go forward for ASLV.

If you have not seen this already, the national Arts Society has launched on its website some very informative material. They are also streaming lectures regularly for you to watch. You can access these at www.connected.theartssociety.org/forum/society-forum.

Another useful site, showing a variety of other arts links, is at http://theartssocietyeastsurreyarea.org.uk/CultureLinks/CultureLinks.aspx  One of our lecturers, Sian Walters, is giving a weekly on-line lecture on Mondays at 9.30am. Go to www.facebook.com/Art-History-in-Focus-169973736373556. (You don’t need a Facebook account).

As to where ASLV goes from here, the picture is of course still very uncertain. You know that we had to cancel the remainder of this season’s lecture programme. Because of uncertainty at Goodwood as to when the House may reopen, I am afraid that we also have to cancel the Summer Social on 27th July. These cancellations left us with out-of-pocket expenses, so I am afraid a refund is not possible, but I am sure you will agree our membership fee represents very good value anyway.

But, on a happier note, we have already planned and – where possible - booked an exciting programme of lectures, visits etc for our next season. Please see the schedule at the end of this Update. Also, we have planned a Christmas Party on 2nd December – in the hopes it will get us back in the mood.

Normally our first lecture of the new season would be on 13th October 2020, along with our Annual General Meeting. At this time we intend to maintain our planned schedule. We will keep this under constant review, mindful of Government rulings and members’ health. We will be updating members on our plans as the situation develops.

This year we are going to postpone membership renewal and renewal will be dealt with by post at a later date. You will receive a letter and a request for payment by cheque or BACS.  The full programme and AGM papers will follow. (If you have moved house recently, please advise our Membership Secretary of your new address by email as below). Your ASLV membership will continue until the revised renewal date and the Society’s Officers will continue in post until the AGM can be re-arranged.

We are delaying membership renewal this year partly to allow us to take account of the virus situation rather nearer to October and partly to decide on what should be next season’s subscription amount, should the season have to start later or be curtailed.

The continued financial health – indeed existence - of your Society rests very much on you renewing your membership, as membership subscriptions form our main source of income. Unlike other local Arts Societies, we do not have a large waiting list; any significant fall in our membership numbers will necessarily result in a reduction in our programme, at the least. So we would urge you please to renew your membership at whatever level is decided. By taking this approach to the uncertainties we face, we will try and ensure that the benefits you receive match the amount you pay.

Our future Updates for members will be by email and shown on our website. The difficulty of organising postal mailings in the lock down - and the costs - are now such that we have to use Royal Mail sparingly. If you have received this April Update through the post and have not previously given us your email address please do so now by emailing our Membership Secretary at suefarman@hotmail.com.

I would ask you please to bear with us in these uncertain times. Please rest assured that the Committee is still meeting – thanks to internet technology – and working to keep in touch with you and bring you as full a programme for the new season as circumstances permit.

Our best wishes to you all.

Ian Farman – Chairman.

the Wallace Collection in London in February 2021;

Salisbury and Wilton House (Spring 2021);

We are also re-scheduling the postponed Special Interest Day “450 Years of Theatre” to Winter 2020/2021, again with priority for those previously booked.

We are planning an evening Christmas Party – drinks, canapes and music – at Chichester College on 2nd December 2020.

The 2020/21 Season Membership renewals

Your Committee has organised a full programme of lectures, visits and study days for the 2020/21 season, which we hope you will all support.

Membership renewals will be sent out in May/June.

Coronavirus Postponements and possible cancellations

Dear Arts Society Lavant Valley members,

In the light of the corona virus situation and Government advice – and our overriding concern to protect members’ health – I regret to advise you that your Committee has decided to cancel, review or postpone all Lectures, Visits and Special Interest Days for the rest of this season up to 30th June 2020.

The effect of this decision is as follows:-

·         The Theatre Special Interest Day on 25th March is cancelled. Members booked have already been advised and their money refunded by BACS. We plan to reschedule this to our next season if possible.

·         The Lectures on 7th April, 5th May and 9th June are cancelled. One may be rescheduled to next season’s programme if possible.

·         The Visits to Knole (closed) on 30th April and to Champs Hill on 13th May are both cancelled. Please do not send in any further bookings. Members already booked will be advised. Their cheques for payment have not been banked and will be returned. We hope to include Knole in next season’s visits programme.

·         The Dance Special Interest Day on 30th June is cancelled. Please do not send in any further bookings. Members already booked will be advised. Their cheques in payment have not been banked and will be returned.

·         The Summer Social Goodwood House tour and tea on 27th July will be reviewed in the light of Government advice. If it seems possible to go ahead, members will be advised and booking forms posted on our website.

We realise that this decision will be a disappointment to members, but we feel that it is the correct one in the circumstances. We very much hope that life will return to normality as the year goes on.  We have already planned a full programme for the 2020/21 season, including (among others and to be confirmed) possible visits to Brighton Pavilion, Sheffield Park Lily Festival and the Wallace Collection and lectures on Raphael, William Morris, Painting the Modern Garden and Beethoven.

This year we shall be posting Renewal Forms to members by the end of May for return by end-June. If you have any change of postal or email address, please email our Membership Secretary at the address given on our website (www.theartssocietylavantvalley.org.uk). Please also continue to monitor this website for updates.

I would like to extend my grateful thanks to our Committee members who have worked so hard to deal with the consequences of this situation.

Our best wishes to you all in these difficult times.

Ian Farman. Chairman.

Petworth House new community space for art workshops, studio intensives and talks.

Erin Barnes of The National Trust says it "is just about to embark on a new programme for Petworth House that puts the arts absolutely central to all activity and also launches a new community space for art workshops, studio intensives and talks.

We don’t go live until April but are trialling the space and offering a preview in an event on the 21st February 7 - 9pm.

We’d be thrilled if you wanted to come and would be happy to offer a few guest places for your team but also £5 tickets for the Arts Society if members were interested in previewing the space, hearing some wonderful talks and seeing the Skyscape exhibition with a welcome drink. You could just send me a list of people by the end of this week and rather than any online booking we would do payment on arrival for ease.

New Heritage Volunteering opportunities at The Weald and Downland Museum were revealed at our February meeting.

Heritage Volunteering  at The Weald and Downland Museum, Singleton

At the moment around half a dozen Heritage Volunteers from four societies steward in the Medieval clothing exhibition in Lower Crawley Hall on the Market Square on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. The museum would like to extend this to include Wednesday afternoons so more stewards are required.

If you would be interested in joining the team, Gillian Wilson from West Sussex DFAS would like to hear from you.

The clothing is hand made by the Museum’s sewing group from wool and linen, the material available to artisan workers, and is shown on figures in the hall for the public to examine. A  few items are there for children to try on. Stewards explain the different items, how  they are made, dyed and sourced. Heritage Volunteer Stewards do not  wear the clothing but it is worn by stewards in many of the houses and for films made at the museum.

Training is given on site and at meetings in the Museum. Stewards work from 1pm to 5pm in pairs. Coffee and tea is available in the Hall and volunteers get 10% off any shop purchases.
Volunteers are not expected to be on duty for more than one afternoon per month. Gillian assured us that volunteers have a lot of fun and as a group have the occasional lunch together.

Gillian plans to organise a coffee morning in Lower Crawley Hall at the Museum for those interested. You  will have an opportunity to find out more, have a look at the clothing and meet Lucy Hockley, Head of interpretation.

Following Gillian’s appearance at our February meeting, 10 Lavant Valley members have already expressed an interest. Add your name to the list by contacting Gillian Wilson on 01798 865569  or by email:  gmw5@btinternet.com.

NADFAS REBRANDING ANNOUNCED

In order to increase membership and raise our public profile NADFAS has been working with Jane Wentworth Associates (an international consultancy specialising in helping cultural organisations define and communicate their brands). The results of this work were announced at a meeting for Society Chairmen in London on 23rd January, when our 'brand' new name and logo were revealed. We are to be called The Arts Society and our local society The Arts Society Lavant Valley.

It was announced that after the AGM in May 2017 The Arts Society will replace NADFAS as our new operating name. The announcement was met with much approval among those present, with many professing the new name to be “spot on”.

NADFAS President, Loyd Grossman, commented:

“Over the past year I have followed the rebranding process with great interest. The outcome is a clear and confident brand with beautifully crafted visuals, which will help ensure the future of The Arts Society for the next 50 years and beyond.”

NADFAS Chairman, June Robinson, reassured members:

“Even though we’ll look and sound a little different, we will still offer the same services: through our excellent lectures we will provide welcoming opportunities for our members to discover and connect to the arts and each other. We will also ensure that heritage has a future through conservation and preservation, and we’ll continue to support the skills of tomorrow’s artists and makers.

The belief that the arts are essential to enriching people’s lives will always be at the very heart of who we are."

Presentation of Church Record of St Mary Sennicotts

The completed Record compiled by the Combined Chichester Church Recorders will be presented to the Church at 6pm on the 31st January 2016. The presentation will take the form of a Church Service at St Mary Sennicotts, together with a short talk by Pam Hilton, the Recorders Leader, before handing over the Record to Father Charles Howard.

The service is open to any Lavant Valley DFAS members and friends who would like to come.  Sennicotts church is very different.  It has box pews, a gallery and no electric light inside the main body of the church. This is why the service is in the evening because the church, with its pink walls, will be candle lit and will look quite magical. It does however have electric wall heaters so it wont be cold.  There is some parking in the lane beside the church but for events, parking is usually in the field next to the church.  For this reason, anyone who is thinking of coming should bring a torch and maybe not wear their best shoes.

Singleton Primary school sponsorship featured in Chichester Observer

The following article appeared in the Chichester Observer today.......

Singleton pupils inspired by School Prayer

PUPILS at Singleton CE Primary School have unveiled their latest artistic masterpiece.

The large, colourful piece of artwork and calligraphy was inspired by the school prayer and now hangs in pride of place in the school hall.

Parents and friends of the school saw the new artwork blessed by the village rector, the Rev Kev Robinson, during a harvest thanksgiving service last Wednesday.

Head teacher Christopher Todd said: “Every pupil has contributed to the new artwork, which will have a major impact in the school hall.

“The pupils took their stimulus from their local environment, taking photographs and researching pictures of flowers, trees and animals to help them with their artwork, using the school prayer, which speaks of the ‘beautiful nature around us’ as their inspiration.”

Thanks to a donation from the local branch of the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies, the pupils were able to work with local artist and calligrapher, Cathy Stables, who provided expert knowledge and advice throughout the development of the project during the summer term.

CFT Press Cuttings Project 2015 - Lunch in the Green Room on 12th January
LUNCH NOW FULLY BOOKED - Contact Liz Juniper for more information on the project. Dear Lavant Valley DFAS members, Best wishes to you all for a very happy and healthy 2015. After the break for Christmas, we shall be starting again on January 12th. As usual, we shall have the morning (9.30am) and afternoon (1.30pm) groups but as it all rather fizzled out just before Christmas as we all found loads that had to be done and other engagements encroaching, we thought it would be good to start the New Year off with a bit of a get together (as we did at the end of the summer session)! As there is nothing going on in the Festival Theatre that day, we have been able to secure the Green Room (back stage at the Festival Theatre) to have a lunch together. Isn’t that great! For those of you who haven’t yet been backstage since the renovations and seen the new green room, it is a treat not to be missed! and we are very grateful to the theatre for allowing us to use it. It will be a simple lunch of home-made soup with french bread and butter. The purpose is just to have a nice get together and catch up. Becky will be baking (place your orders now!) – if you’d like to bring something of your own along, please feel free. Alternatively, if you’d like to contribute to the cost, we’ll pass a hat around. As you probably already know, we no longer have the use of the football club for our project but space has been found for us backstage at the Minerva. It’s not so spacious as the football club but it is lovely that a place for us has been found at the theatre. Therefore, we suggest that everyone coming to the morning session meets in the foyer of the Minerva at 9.30. Those coming for the lunch and the afternoon session, there will be someone to meet you in the Minerva foyer at 12.15. If you can only manage lunch and would just like to catch up with us and learn how things are going, do come along. We’ll give you an update and plans for the year (the last one!) so that we can have a big push to get as much done as possible before the Pass-It-On project finishes. If you can only manage the afternoon session, we’ll meet you in the foyer at 1.30pm. We’ll have the new sign-up sheets ready for you on the 12th. If you haven't been before but would be interested in finding out about the project do come along on the 12th. To get a rough idea of how many to cater for, please could you let Liz know if you are able to join us for lunch. Looking forward to seeing you on the 12th. Liz Juniper Heritage Volunteer Rep.

Inspired by the Cathedral: An Exhibition by Lavant CE Primary School in Chichester Cathedral's North Transept until 20th November 2014
The pupils of Lavant CE Primary School are showing their creative talents at Chichester Cathedral this month. The artworks, referred to in our 'Young Arts' section, are on display in the North Transept of the Cathedral until 20th November. It really is a most impressive display and shows how well they have used our grant. The artworks include a beautiful set of stained 'glass' panels, some stone effect gargoyles, textile wall hangings and a series of 3D pieces based on the Cathedral's famous Chichester reliefs. Look at the Gallery for more photographs.

Visit to Hampton Court Palace and Ham House
42 members of Lavant Valley DFAS enjoyed a trip to Hampton Court Palace and Ham House. Although many of us had visited Hampton Court before, we all found new areas to explore including the Glorious Georges exhibition marking the 300 year anniversary of George I's accession to the British throne. As you can see from the picture, we encountered some very interesting characters during our tour of the magnificent Great Hall and Tudor apartments. A visit to Ham House in the afternoon completed a thoroughly enjoyable day and our thanks go to Josette Fox for her excellent planning and organisation.

Summer Social at The Cass Sculpture Foundation Goodwood
In glorious sunshine LVDFAS members viewed the many monumental contemporary sculptures on display in the stunning 26 acre grounds of the CASS Sculpture Foundation. The Foundation also provided a tour of their fascinating archive. A delicious lunch was served in the exciting setting of the Lower Gallery. All agreed that it was a wonderful day which gave members an opportunity to socialise with friends and to make new ones.

Presentation of the Record of St Mary the Virgin Apuldram
On 15 June the Record was presented to the church at the morning service. The photograph shows the team with the Rector, Rev Canon Moira Wickens and Hilary Caine who had looked after us since the start and who received the Record on behalf of the church from our Leader, Pam Hilton. The two Lavant Valley members, our chairman Brenda Gay and John Williams can also be identified.

List of houses and gardens in Bordeaux covered in Helen McCabe's lecture
List of Houses and Gardens of the Bordeaux Region Castelnaud and Beynac fortresses. Overlooking the Dordogne, on D46 west of Sarlat. Chateau de Puyguilhem. A few miles to the north-west of Brantome, off D939 . State-owned, currently being refurbished inside. Stunning position. Chateau de Losse. North-west of Sarlat. On D706 just south of Montignac. Owned by private foundation. Beautiful gardens, guided tours of well-furnished rooms. Chateau de Montbazillac. A few miles south of Bergerac, off N21. Owned by Montbazillac wine cooperative and you can taste and buy the wine. The chateau is furnished, you go round at your own pace. Delightful setting. Chateau de Malle. Privately owned. South-east of Bordeaux, off D10 near Langon. A stunning ensemble: formal gardens and a good guided tour of the 17C chateau. Chateau de Hautefort. 25 miles east of Perigueux, off A89. The setting is magnificent – the 17C chateau stands high above a very quaint village. Although much has been restored since a fire in 1969, it is still well worth visiting. Many of the rooms are well furnished, and you go round at your own pace. Topiary gardens. Bordeaux itself is a stunningly beautiful city with magnificent public buildings and private houses. They are all built of creamy white limestone with elegant and refined sculptural detailing. It is well worth spending a whole day just walking round the main streets, the quais, and the merchants’ quartier des Chartrons, museum of dec. arts. Wine chateaux of the Medoc. North of Bordeaux, off the D1 or D2. You can see many of these famous chateaux from the road. I mention Chateau Margaux, chateau Leoville Barton, Chateau Cos d’Estournel, but there are many more to see. And wine tasting/tours can be arranged. Seaside villas in Arcachon. About one hour’s drive due west of Bordeaux, on the Atlantic coast. Arcachon itself has lost its charm, but the leafy residential area known as the Ville d’Hiver is charming, with a great variety of villas to see. Roquetaillade. South east of Bordeaux near Langon. A spectacular early 14C fortified castle which, remarkably, is privately owned. A number of rooms were decorated by Viollet le Duc in the 1860s, and these are fascinating – beautiful stencilling, lots of imagination and a very distinctive style. Chateau de Puymartin. A small chateau a few miles west of Sarlat, owned by the same family for 500 years, thanks to the fact that it was restored and refurbished inside at the end of the 19C. The Contesse de Montbrun does B and B (2 rooms – see Alastair Sawday guide) and her son does the guided tours. Highly recommended. Gardens. The Jardin de Marquessac is a park on a plateau high above Dordogne, planted with thousands of box plants used in countless different ways to create green vistas, groves and glades amidst the trees. Most unusual. Breathtaking views. The Jardins d’Eyrignac, north - east of Sarlat off D47 are beautiful. A highly sophisticated, complex topiary garden created in the 1960s with tremendous flair. Also a rose garden with beautiful fountains created in the 1990s. All a delight. Jardin de l’Imaginaire at Terrasson, in the north Perigord. A 1990s contemporary garden designed and planted by Franco-American Kathryn Gustafson on a steepish slope. A bit gimmicky for my taste (a downright ugly rose garden) but lovely fountains and waterfalls and woodland.

Church Recording News The Church of St Mary the Virgin Apuldram
